Borrowing laptops in the Information Commons
Read the Laptops FAQs
To borrow a laptop, go to the IC Helpdesk, Level 2, the Kate Edger Information
Commons or Grafton IC Helpdesk, Bldg 503, Level G, Grafton Campus.
When you wish to borrow a Laptop, you must bring your University of Auckland ID card or no Laptop will be issued to you.
User responsibilities
When you borrow a laptop from the IC Helpdesk, you will be asked to sign a Laptop Custodian agreement, by which you assume full responsibility for the laptop while it is on loan to you. By signing the agreement, you undertake to comply with all the applicable sections of the Laptop Loan Policy and Procedures (PDF, 160k). The agreement you sign will be valid until the end of the
calendar year. After this time, you will need to sign the agreement again.
Loan periods
You may borrow a laptop for a two-hour period. You can renew the laptop online
once via Voyager for
further two hours from the time of renewal (for example, if the laptop is due at 2pm, renewing it at 1.30pm will make it due at 3.30pm, not 4pm).
If you still wish to use the laptop at the end of your loan/renewal period, you must return to the IC Helpdesk and the laptop will be reissued to you if there are laptops still available.
NOTE: The laptops cannot be borrowed overnight.

Patron blocks and fines
Fines are generated at the rate of 15 cents per minute for an overdue laptop (maximum fine of $150.00). If you lose the borrowed laptop, replacement cost is $3000.00. Please note that any laptops not returned after 3 days are automatically charged as lost.
Note carefully that you cannot pay library fines or return your books at the Information Commons, nor can you pay laptop fines at any of the libraries. However, if you incur fines that exceed the limits of either the Libraries or the Information Commons Laptop system, you may not borrow either books or laptops.
Accessing and saving your files
To access the files saved on the IC drive ("My Documents" folder,
or AFS storage), double-click on the Connect to my Homedrive icon on the
desktop. On the following screen, type in your NetID and
NetAccount password and click Login.
Software and Internet access
The laptops are equipped with the same software as the desktop computers in the Information Commons. Please see the Software page for the list of available applications.
Each laptop is fitted with a wireless LAN adaptor, allowing it to connect to the University of Auckland network and the Internet. To access the non-University Internet resources, please make sure that you are logged into your NetAccount and that there are sufficient funds in your Internet quota.
For additional information, please refer to the Laptops FAQs or contact one of the IC Helpdesks.
