 | To whom it may concern,
There is a notice which has been posted up at the sylvia ashton library regarding after hours access to the information commons at epsom campus. It informs students access will cease on the 16th of November. In my opinion this is too early in the year to restrict access for students. There is a number of reasons:
-Some students are still on practicum till the beginning of December. These students are obviously occupied during the day, and leave their recording of feedback, assignment work for after hours, and therefore rely on access to epsom infocoms.
-Although some lectures and exams have finished by the 16th of November, there are still students who are working on assignments, and have extensions, written permission by epsom campus university employees to add time for them to complete assessments, which they are still yet to complete.
-The academic year for alot of students does not finish until the 25-26th of November.
These students are aware of other campuses with computer access. But these are epsom campus students, who are familiar with their campus, and have all access to e-resources which are available for them on computers at the epsom infocoms.
Security staff remain on the premises during the year, and after lectures and exams have finished, so there would be minimal inconvenience in this context.
It would be good to see access to epsom infocoms for students extended for another 3 to 4 weeks. This would provide the support and resources necessary for them to maximise their potential to complete assessment work, which is what both student and university are trying to achieve, and what students pay for in their fees to the university every year - the opportunity to access university resources, at critical times such as the hectic end of the study year.
Thanks for your time, look forward to your reply.
ck. | | | Hi CK,
Thanks for your suggestion.
We agree that an extension of after-hours access at Epsom IC will likely assist several Epsom-based students who have assignments due past the regular termination of the semester. In 2010, we will seriously consider extending access two weeks past the official end of the Semester 2.
The application form and the list of terms and conditions that we emailed you when your card was activated stated that access would terminate Sunday 15 November 2009. Perhaps if you had raised the issue much earlier we might have had time to organize extending access in consultation with the other stakeholders (e.g., Faculty of Education, Card Control, Security, SAW Library). As it stands, it is logistically too late to extend access this year.
As a viable alternative for the next few weeks, Grafton IC is located at the Medical School across the road from Auckland City Hospital. It opens at 7:30am and closes at 10pm, Monday-Thursday. It also has quite long hours Friday-Sunday. Give them a call on 373-7599 x82300 for their full details. Grafton is only five minutes down the road from Epsom by car. Weekday parking after 6pm and weekend parking is free. Grafton uses the same logon, has the same access to your computer files, and has a staff member present to assist you.
Kind Regards,
Information Commons

 | I have after hours access to the Epsom Information Commons and I noted today that this access will be terminated on Monday the 16th November at 9 a.m.
I AM STILL STUDYING AND WORKING UP TO THE 20TH NOVEMBER ....... I have two major assignments to complete. It is not yet the end of my uni year.
The computer lab is where I do all my work and closing it early is going to totally disrupt my normal study patterns.
Can you please reconsider the date you are closing it.
Linda
