Microsoft Office Online Training

"Microsoft Office online training" offered in the Information Commons utilizes "Microsoft e-learning library" (MELL). This is e-learning lessons in Microsoft software. E-learning is found to be an effective and complementary way to learn in order to gain the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in the university environment. Many students are expected to produce documents that are equivalent to industry standards; MELL can help students achieve this

MELL gives access to software training that caters to all regardless of skill level or learning style. In the Information Commons computing environment, core and advanced level learning for MS 2003 is available as well as Professional Suite, Access and FrontPage.

How to use

  1. Click on the preferred option on the left hand side of this page.
  2. Click on the preferred module on the MELL page, this gives you a list of contents from a module to choose from.
  3. You are ready to start. Follow the screen instructions. You will first be given a "scenario" which you can refer again at any point by clicking on the "view scenario" button on the upper left corner. Also located there is "show me" option which gives you further tips.
  4. In following a lesson, you may fast forward by clicking next.

Use MEL to its full potential.

  1. Know what you don't know. Before you start online training, take advantage of the skills assessment options. Discover your weaknesses and plan accordingly.
  2. Make a plan. Write down what you want to accomplish. It is a good idea to identify what you need to produce in an assignment. For example, you may need to do a graph in Excel, but do you need to do a histogram or a line graph?
  3. Take notes throughout the lesson of areas you may wish to explore further and do an end of lesson assessment to highlight any problem areas.
